Making a Face in Gumpaste
Now to make a face you need a few different tools, you will also use your fingers quite a bit. These are the tools that i used for making this face.
This face was made rather fast, and it's not the prettiest, BUT it does illustrate the methods used to make one, just take the skills and make as pretty or as ugly a face as you like ; ).
One tip to stop your gumpaste from drying out while you are working with it, is coat it with shortening or vegetable oil, just a touch, don't go soaking it : ) you'll end up with a big gobbly oily mess. I normally use shortening but this time i used a vegetable oil spray. It also stops your gumpaste getting wrinkles while you are trying to push/prod it into shape : )
Colour some gumpaste in flesh colour, this can be done with brown, pink, ivory etc, depending on the tone you want. Then roll it into an oval sized shape. |
Squeeze it as pictured to form a chin. |
Using a balling tool, mark out the eye sockets, this will also give you the starts of the nose, as it will also mark the bridge of the nose. |
Squeeze the sides near the eyes, this will give some shape to the cheeks. |
Using the hook tool (I have no idea what this tool is called, hook sounds good to me) using upwards strokes, form the nose. |

Using the same technique, form the lips. |
Use a needle, toothpick or some such instrument to give the nose some nostrils. |
You should have something resembling this. Now don't forget to not let the paste dry out, keep using shortening or cooking spray on your hands and rub some on the paste to stop it from drying and to stop it from getting wrinkles when you work on it. |

Now it's time to give the face some space for the eyes, make a hole on each side. |
Roll two WHITE gumpaste tear drop shapes, try to make them as similar in size as possible, these will become the eyes. |
Glue them into the holes you made earlier. |
Using the flat side of your hook tool, flatten the eyes, and give them some shape. |
Then using a paintbrush or edible pens, color in the eyes. |
Using a very small piece of flesh coloured gumpaste, roll out a small sausage which you will stick to the eye to form an eyelid. Do this to both sides. |

Now you will need a very thin paintbrush, I used a 000 brush, and some cake decorator's alcohol (you can use lemon extract), you mix it with a tiny bit of colour, and using feathery strokes, you color in the eyebrows, and do the same for the eyelashes.
Then using some light flesh colour, mixed with a little pink, paint in the lips. |
| |
At this stage you will need to attach the head to a body, before you put on the hair, for the purpose of this tutorial, i have added hair. The reason for adding hair last is that you can position it anywhere you like on the body, if the hair is long and you add it now, it will break off when you add the body.
You can do the hair using a sugarcraft gun or just roll it using your hands, which is what i did for this face.
The hair was done in layers, adding more and more to get some volume
